Speak up. Demand your rights. Stop accepting the status quo. No one is going to change our situation but ourselves. Bring the masjid back to the way it was during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (saws). There is no back entrance to the Kaaba, there isn’t a separate room to God. We all have the right to prayer and no one should be prohibiting this, especially ourselves.

i can already smell the hatemail and slanderous re-blogs, but what-ev-er. haters gonna hate, fatties gonna fat!
one of the best ways for me to practice radical self-love is to draw pictures of my fine fat ass. seriously! i’ve read a lot about/seen a lot of folks who do photographic self-portraiture to the same ends, and i think that rules. for me, it’s gotta be drawing, because i’m happiest with a pen in hand.
(by the way, the banner quote is from an amazing parks and rec gif. yeah, i quoted a gif.)

[Image Description: Picture of Sheng Wang, a Taiwanese American stand-up comedian, at a performance. The text under the picture says: “A friend said to me, ‘Hey you need to grow a pair. Grow a pair, bro.’ It’s when someone calls you weak, but they associate it with a lack of testicles. Which is weird because testicles are the most sensitive things in the world. If you suddenly just grew a pair, you’d be a lot more vulnerable. If you want to be tough, you should lose a pair. If you want to be real tough, you should grow a vagina — those things can take a pounding.”]

PLUS Model Magazine, a publication celebrating the plus-size fashion industry, recently printed some revealing statistics about the models that exhibit our clothes, sell our products, and generally define female beauty. The highlights:

  • Twenty years ago, the average model weighed 8% less than the average woman; today, she weighs 23% less.
  • Most models meet the Body Mass Index physical criteria for anorexia.
  • When the plus-size modeling industry began, the models ranged in size from 14 to 20; today, they average between a size 6 and 14.
  • Half of American women wear a size 14 or larger, but most standard clothing outlets cater to sizes 14 or smaller.

Not smarter. Not nicer. Not better people. Not a scientist or an engineer or a teacher or a mother. Just thinner.

We as a society have to remember that when we see ads on TV saying ‘LOSE 10 LBS N 10 DAYS!’ ‘GET RID OF THAT UGLY FAT!’ ‘TAKE THESE DIET PILLS!’, our children are seeing them too.

When you’re complaining about how ‘fat’ you look in the mirror, your little sister or brother, your son or daughter, your cousin, the child you babysit, sees it. And they internalize it. It starts them on a LIFETIME of being obsessed with body image. They’re actually MORE likely to become obese because of hyper-awareness of body image and constantly feeling like they’re not good enough. They’re MORE likely to end up with an eating disorder.

It has to stop.
